It's wide open.

Interest rates are super low, violence is close to an all time low, industries are being remade and there's more leverage for the insurgent outsider than ever before in history.

The status quo is taking a beating, there's no question about it. That's what makes it a revolution.

I said this nine years ago and I stand by it. In the years since I wrote this essay, people have started social movements, built billion dollar companies, toppled dictators, found new jobs, learned new skills and generally made a ruckus.

Go!

Hindsight is 20/20. People are already looking back on the 1990s and wishing that they had had more courage. When you look back on the 2000s, what will you have to say for yourself? [The following is reprinted from 9 years ago].

Here's a question that you should clip out and tape to your bathroom mirror. It might save you some angst 15 years from now. The question is, What did you do back when interest rates were at their lowest in 50 years, crime was close to zero, great employees were looking for good jobs, computers made product development and marketing easier than ever, and there was almost no competition for good news about great ideas?

Many people will have to answer that question by saying, "I spent my time waiting, whining, worrying, and wishing." Because that's what seems to be going around these days. Fortunately, though, not everyone will have to confess to having made such a bad choice.

While your company has been waiting for the economy to rebound, Reebok has launched Travel Trainers, a very cool-looking lightweight sneaker for travelers. They are selling out in Japan -- from vending machines in airports!

While Detroit's car companies have been whining about gas prices and bad publicity for SUVs (SUVs are among their most profitable products), Honda has been busy building cars that look like SUVs but get twice the gas mileage. The Honda Pilot was so popular, it had a waiting list.

While Africa's economic plight gets a fair amount of worry, a little startup called ApproTEC is actually doing something about it. The new income that its products generate accounts for 0.5% of the entire GDP of Kenya. How? It manufactures a $75 device that looks a lot like a StairMaster. But it's not for exercise. Instead, ApproTEC sells the machine to subsistence farmers, who use its stair-stepping feature to irrigate their land. People who buy it can move from subsistence farming to selling the additional produce that their land yields -- and triple their annual income in the first year of using the product.

While you've been wishing for the inspiration to start something great, thousands of entrepreneurs have used the prevailing sense of uncertainty to start truly remarkable companies. Lucrative Web businesses, successful tool catalogs, fast-growing PR firms -- all have started on a shoestring, and all have been profitable ahead of schedule. The Web is dead, right? Well, try telling that to Meetup.com, a new Web site that helps organize meetings anywhere and on any topic. It has 200,000 registered users -- and counting.

Maybe you already have a clipping on your mirror that asks you what you did during the 1990s. What's your biggest regret about that decade? Do you wish that you had started, joined, invested in, or built something? Are you left wishing that you'd at least had the courage to try? In hindsight, the 1990s were the good old days. Yet so many people missed out. Why? Because it's always possible to find a reason to stay put, to skip an opportunity, or to decline an offer. And yet, in retrospect, it's hard to remember why we said no and easy to wish that we had said yes.

The thing is, we still live in a world that's filled with opportunity. In fact, we have more than an opportunity -- we have an obligation. An obligation to spend our time doing great things. To find ideas that matter and to share them. To push ourselves and the people around us to demonstrate gratitude, insight, and inspiration. To take risks and to make the world better by being amazing.

Are these crazy times? You bet they are. But so were the days when we were doing duck-and-cover air-raid drills in school, or going through the scares of Three Mile Island and Love Canal. There will always be crazy times.

So stop thinking about how crazy the times are, and start thinking about what the crazy times demand. There has never been a worse time for business as usual. Business as usual is sure to fail, sure to disappoint, sure to numb our dreams. That's why there has never been a better time for the new. Your competitors are too afraid to spend money on new productivity tools. Your bankers have no idea where they can safely invest. Your potential employees are desperately looking for something exciting, something they feel passionate about, something they can genuinely engage in and engage with.

You get to make a choice. You can remake that choice every day, in fact. It's never too late to choose optimism, to choose action, to choose excellence. The best thing is that it only takes a moment -- just one second -- to decide.

Before you finish this paragraph, you have the power to change everything that's to come. And you can do that by asking yourself (and your colleagues) the one question that every organization and every individual needs to ask today: Why not be great?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 281px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--gxg40L245E/Tv_ZChGt3WI/AAAAAAAAANk/GRyH50Wp29s/s320/oppurtunity.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692507091289103714" />

Some Thoughts on Leadership

I’m not going to pretend I wrote any of this, so don’t accuse me of plagiarism. The two men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates the British throne, the reluctant king relies on Logue to help him make a radio broadcast at the beginning of World War II.
We also see the movie as a parable — a story about a leader healing from the wounds of broken trust. King George VI had to heal from childhood betrayal before he could “find his voice” and become the leader his country needed at the brink of war. The king, however, found it extremely hard to ask for — and accept — support that he, as that would-be leader, needed.
If you’re like most leaders, you, too, struggle with asking for, and accepting, support — support you might need to perform, such as King George VI, to your most powerful potential. You probably think you should be able to go it alone, to have all of the answers. Yet, in failing to receive support, odds are you are depriving yourself — and your organization — of your true greatness. Accepting support isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of courage and strength. Only strong, self-aware leaders can size up a situation and see, realistically, what they can or cannot face alone.
In our work with leaders, we find that there are at least three common, instinctive reactions to the idea of receiving support. Our advice and insight for how to deal with them:

“I’m the leader here. I can’t let on that I need help.”
Sure, you can. People expect you to lead, and if accepting support from others will help you be an even better leader, it’s your best course of action. What’s more, by example, you’re letting your leadership team, among others, know that it’s OK to receive support, embrace their human-ness and to learn and grow through and with other people. That awareness can deepen their connection and commitment to one another and to the organization. It also builds trust and respect.

“I don’t know whom I can trust. I don’t want to open myself up to be vulnerable.”
Make a wise choice — and take the risk. Playing it close to the vest might be your default, but that doesn’t mean it’s the smartest thing to do. Also, ask yourself whether you’re really concerned about trust or, more likely, about letting others in. During highly stressful periods, you might unreasonably question everyone’s intentions. Resist those doubts and fears. They can — and will — hold you back.

“I want to be the best leader I can be for my organization. That has nothing to do with my personal life.”
Really? You’re a whole person, and your success comes from the sum of your experiences. Additionally, as a leader, your ability to build and rebuild trust with others has a lot to do with how you’ve dealt with — or haven’t dealt with — situations of broken trust in your life. If you don’t want to “go there” with someone within your organization, look for someone on the outside — your Lionel Logue.

Image credit: Laurie Sparham, The Weinstein Co.

Wonderful Lavender!

I need some Lavender.

I mean, LOTS of lavender!

Things have been a bit stressful around here. Erika is rocking along at the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. She has one more weekend to go and the weather forecast is looking pretty good.

But back to the lavender. Business has been slow, and I know it’s because of all the turmoil going on. Prices are rising, incomes are flat. Tornados are doing a darn good job destroying jobs. And this is where lavender comes in. It is just what the doctor ordered.

We all know that lavender is the best thing in the world for relaxation and stress relief. I’m starting to believe that the ‘Rocky Mountain High’ is in part because of all the lavender that grows so easily up there.

This herb has so many uses. Put a few drops on your pillow or on a handkerchief and it is as good as any sleeping pill – and a lot safer too! I use our Magick Elixir so much because of the lavender in it. It relaxes me while the peppermint and eucalyptus and rosemary go to work on my immune system and helps me to breath easier. Try this…lay down at night after a hard day, breath in some Magic Elixir and notice how fast your whole body just seems to relax.

And better yet, I found that it works on the dog too. Fleas are bad this year, and I just didn’t want to go spend the money for the good flea medicine because we are going to Colorado soon where there aren’t any fleas (maybe because of the lavender growing up there?) so we were browsing online and came across some recipes for aromatherapy flea repellent. One recipe blended peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus and lavender. Oh My! That’s our Magick Elixir! So we put some in a spray bottle with water, shook it up and sprayed our dog as best we could. Mind you, Shadow is 14 years old and has a hard time getting around these days. She has fat tumors, arthritis, she’s overweight and this heat makes breathing hard on her. She stays inside in the AC (and away from outside fleas) as much as possible. I rolled her over and sprayed her belly and legs, then along her back and neck, rubbing the fur up so I could get it into her skin well. Before I was done at least two fleas jumped out! According to the article we read, these oils will not only repel the fleas, but will kill them as well. Sure enough, within 20-30 minutes she was sleeping very soundly, and was very relaxed. So we are keeping her sprayed every day until we leave here and she is enjoying the mellowness it gives her. It works with ridding lice also, and can be used in the treatment of ringworms.

Lavender has a well-established tradition as a folk remedy, and its scent is still familiar to almost everyone. It was used to ‘comfort the stomach’ but above all as a cosmetic water, and insect repellent, to scent linen, and as a reviving yet soothing oil. Generally regarded as the most versatile essence therapeutically.

We’ve long know lavender is also good for bee and wasp stings, and other insect bites. Rub a little lavender on any sting or bite and the itching and pain will go away within 60 seconds. Lavender is a universal oil because it balances the body and is known to work wherever there is a need. It is probably the number one oil anyone should have in their home or traveling medicine chest. It works on abscesses, acne, allergies, athlete’s feet and fungal infections. Boils, bruises, burns, cold sores, cuts. It is good on the skin for just about all your needs.

Use lavender by itself, or mix with a few drops of peppermint and use as a headache relief. We have had several people tell us it is the only thing that helps them with their migraines.

Lavender is safe to use neat – or straight from the bottle. Most essential oils aren’t recommended to use this way, but lavender is the exception. Lavender is considered one of the safest of oils, but because of it’s effect on the uterus it shouldn’t be used in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Generally it is considered a non dermal toxin.

True Lavender is also known as lavendula angustifolia or lavendula officinalis. This is considered the best lavender. There is also the variations Spike lavender and Lavindin. Spike lavender is not as delicate and is more camphor-ish. Lavindin is a hybrid of True lavender and Spike lavender, and is cheaper but not as potent as True lavender. It takes about 150 pounds or more of lavender buds to make one pound of essential oil. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the fresh flowering tops and an absolute and concrete are also produced by solvent extraction in smaller quantities. The oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid and the absolute is a dark green viscous liquid.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 145px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mMHOA9kyThg/Td2U_06dHzI/AAAAAAAAANQ/QNxwLqSNowo/s320/lavender-bottle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610804535029997362" />

Lavender is an evergreen woody shrub, up to m (3ft) tall, with pale green, narrow, linear leaves and flowers on blunt spikes of a beautiful violet-blue color. The whole plant is highly aromatic. It is indigenous to the Mediterranean, and is now grown all over the world. Most of the commercially produced oil comes from the mountains of France and Spain. You can find lavender festivals and celebrations all over the world, including the Blanco Lavender Festival in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

The word lavender comes from the Latin word lavare, which means ‘to wash’. English and Dutch: occupational name for a washerman or launderer, Old French, Middle Dutch lavendier (Late Latin lavandarius, an agent derivative of lavanda ‘washing’, ‘things to be washed’). The term was applied especially to a worker in the wool industry who washed the raw wool or rinsed the cloth after fulling. There is no evidence for any direct connection with the word for the plant (Middle English, Old French lavendre). However, the etymology of the plant name is obscure; it may have been named in ancient times with reference to the use of lavender oil for cleaning or of the dried heads of lavender in perfuming freshly washed clothes.

You can cook with lavender and you can find many recipes. It adds a unexpected flavor to any meal. You can use the flowers, leaves or stems, but the buds are the most delicate. Always use clean, pesticide free lavender when cooking. You can find organic lavender buds on several online merchants. There is more information at Joy of Lavender and at <a href=”http:// www.purplehazelavender.com/cooking.html” target=”_blank”>Purple Haze Lavender and Whats Cooking America.

Lavender history goes back over 2500 years. The plant was sold and traded by the Greeks around 600 BC to the Hyeres Islands off the coast of France. The first recorded arrival in North America was by the English Pilgrims in the 1600’s. The Egyptians used Lavender for mummification and made stills to extract the oils. They made perfumes and traces of lavender were found in urns in the tomb of Tutankhamen. Solid cones of unguents was placed on the heads of wealthy men and women and as they unguents melted, it would perfume their entire body.

Queen Victoria loved lavender so much she had it used to wash the floors and furniture. Sachets were used in the linens and cloths. This became a very fashionable fragrance among all the ladies at that time and because of this lavender is commonly associated with the Victorian Age by most people.

During the Great Plague in London in the 17th century, bunches of lavender were tied to each wrist to protect against infection. The grave robbers used to wash in Four Thieves Vinegar, which contained lavender. They rarely become infected. Another source says the Four Thieves went into the homes of the plague victims. They said they oiled themselves with a mixture of equal amounts of lavender, absinthe (wormwood), rue, sage, mint and rosemary mixed in vinegar.

In folklore lavender is frequently associated with love, but also with protection, sleep, chastity, longevity, purification, happiness and peace. On St. Luke’s’ Day young maidens would sip on a lavender tea and sing “St Luke, St Luke be kind to me, In my dreams let me my true love see.”.

Lavender is associated with the Heart Chakra.

Traditionally, a cross of lavender was hung on the door to safeguard against evil and children would wear lavender on their shirts to avert the evil eye.

Lavender is called blue magic, and lavender is ruled by the planet and God Mercury, The Great Communicator. This is why we mix lavender with sandalwood for our Virgo oil. But it is ruled by the element air (the element of thought) and is masculine – or yang – in nature.

At midsummer, mix chamomile, lavender, mugwort and rose petals to call up the sprites, fairies, brownies and elves.

For security and peacefulness, mix basil, frankincense, lavender, lemon balm, rue and thyme. Wear such an oil mixture for security and peacefulness, or mix the oils and herbs in a powder incense and burn to induce sleep and rest, and scatter about lavender buds about the home to maintain peace.

Lavender is carried to see ghosts. Place lavender under your pillow while thinking of your wish. Do this just prior to retiring for the night. In the morning, if you have dreamt of anything relating to your wish, it will come true. If your dream was unconnected with your wish, then your wish will not manifest.

If you are one of those lavender addicts, then Joys of Lavender and Discover Lavender are two places you want to visit.

And us, of course!

Ground Rules for Living

1. Keep Your Word

Whenever you don't keep your word, you lessen your experience of yourself and you put something into your environment that always comes back. It maybe as serious as someone loosing trust in you. There is always a consequence. When you are crisp with your integrity, life is crisp. Keep your word, it does matter.

2. Avoid Nothing

What you avoid in life is never the circumstances. It is an internal experience that gets reactivated by circumstances . By resisting and avoiding that experience you create a nerve. The internal experience that you avoid then becomes stronger. As you allow yourself to experience it, it goes away and the nerve diappears. When you avoid something, the nerve gets stronger and your environment becomes threatening. If there is something you are avoiding, handle it quickly and get it behind you.

3. Remove All Unworkability

Unworkability exists only because we tolerate it. If there is unworkability in your life, handle it now. Do whatever it takes to remove it. You may have created such a mess that it will take a lot to handle it. Don't wait. Have everything in your life work. Don't tolerate unworkability.

4. Keep Your Enviornment Clean And In Working Order

When your environment is sloppy and cluttered, so is your vision and clairity. A sloppy environment will hold you back. Clean your home, your work and your car. Fix or get rid of everything that doesn't work. Handle anything that you have a charge on, even if it seems insignificant. Get rid of what you don't use or don't need.

5. Be Positive. Do Not Speak Or Think Negatively Of Yourself, Of Others, Or Of Life.

Every word you speak and every thought you accept creates your reality of life. You act consistent with it and it becomes true. Your creat your circumstances by the words you speak and the thoughts you accept. Don't speak or think negatively unless that's the way you want it to be.

6. Acknowledge That You Are 100% The Cause Of Everything That Happens In Your Life.

The more you see yourself as the cause of what happens in your life, the more you can determine what happens. Others may also be responsible , but when you point the finger at them, you give away all your power. You the become stuck and at their mercy. Pointing the finger at you allows you to take charge of your life.

7. Allow Everything. Let Go Of All Unwillingness.

You are either allowing or resisting. When you allow and are willing for life to be as it is, you are in The Flow. You become clear and effective. When you resist and demand, you are in trouble. Both your aliveness and your effectiveness disappear. Give yourself permission for life to be as it is. Then go do what you need to do, coming from allowing rather than resisting.

8. Let Go Of All Your Attachments.

Anything you can't let go of hurts you. You can be attached to any thing: a person, a thing, a circumstance or a way of being. When you are threatened by the loss of what you are attached to, you go crazy. Attachments are like anchors. They keep you firmly in place. You can't move forward. You have to stay to hang on. Let go of all your attachments. Release whatever you're hanging on to and give it permission to go. If it stays you really have it. If it doesn't, you didn't have it anyway. When there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to stop you.

9. Let Go Of All Upsets.

An upset is a signal that there is something you are not allowing. Find out what it is and release it and the upset will disappear. Your aliveness will return. Life is always the way it is. Hanging on to upsets can only get in your way.

10. Release All Resentments

We resent so we can avoid something. When you avoid confronting your responsibility you suffer. You die inside. To release a resentment you need to forgive. Look for your responsibility and acknowledge it. Totally forgive others, your self and life. You wiill never be free until all resentments are gone.

11. Have Every Relationship Work.

Whenever a realtionship doesn't work, you pay a big price inside. The more important the relationship, the bigger the price. To have a relationship work, forgive them for everything and give them full permission to be the way they are. Love them, empower them and take sole responsibility for the success of the relationship. Make sure every realtionship you have, either past or present, is a full expression of love.

12. Clean Up Whatever You've Done That Is Against Your Integrity.

Clean up all the skeletons in your closet. Acknowledge all your misdeeds. Communicate everything so that you are hiding nothing. Set yourself free from the past. Be willing for anyone to know everything. The withholding destroys your aliveness and has you live your life in fear. It forces you to hold back.

13. Participate Fully In Life. Don't Withdraw.

At any moment you are either participating in life or withdrawing. You are either at cause or at effect. When you withdraw, you stop creating and start reacting. Life then goes downhill fast. To have life work, you have to be in life. The cost of withdrawing can be severe suffering. Stay in charge of your life and live it fully.

14. Have Your Life e About More Than You. Serve!

When you put the focus on you, problems and upsets grow. When you put the focus on sevring others, who you are comes forth. Find something more important than you and throw yourself into it. Find your heart and live it. Have your life be about contributing and giving. Find how to serve.

To Dodge, or not to Dodge

That is the question.

Every day you make decisions. What to wear. What to eat. Some decisions are more important. What kind of car to buy? Do you even need a car now?

Ten months and 2 postings ago I wrote a blog about roadie vehicles. The vehicle of choice for most roadies for many years was the Ford Econoline. Awesome, tough, reliable. It can carry all your stuff AND you can sleep in it. I’m talking, of course, about the life style of the young and restless. Those of us nomads that travel from renaissance festival to renaissance festival (or gig to gig for you musicians). We were young. It was fun and an adventure to be on the road. We would fix a small bed, a few shelves, perhaps some curtains. Called it home. Some vans had little A/C units stuck in the back window. Many had big dogs taking up the whole passenger seat.

We grew older. We were still on the road. The comforts of life started looking better and better. We’d get a 12 foot bumper pull trailer to pull behind our van, giving us more room to haul our stuff. Years passed. The bumper pull was traded for a gooseneck or fifth wheel, and the loyal, now ragged looking Ford was retired with much love and fanfare and replaced with a Dodge Ram 3500. It was the influence of the 1990’s and we felt we were all moving up in the world. And, we didn’t attract as much attention from the DOT.

The Dodges (and Ford Power Strokes) and the nice sanitary looking travel trailers represented to us a sort of moving up in the world. As if we were attaining the dream of our parents by finally getting that house in the “good” neighborhood. But we missed our vans. Our vans, with so much of who we were written all through them. It was like letting go of our childhood pets that had shared so many memories with us.

But there are still those of us who like to be creative in our travels. Larry and I bought a 42 foot dragster hauler trailer and have stripped it out and we are rebuilding it into our on the road home. Then, because it was a tad too much for our Dodge Ram 2500, we made the difficult decision to sell the Dodge and go bigger. We bought a International 4700 series crew cab. Larry finally has his own big truck again!

Ok, well, it isn’t a BIG truck. More like a Class 5. But it was bigger than even those F-450’s, but under CDL weight. This turn out is going to be cool!

Reality sets in. Time for ANOTHER major decision. After selling the Dodge, we were left without a run-about vehicle. My sister loaned us an old Ford F150 for the summer. At the end of last year, we found a great deal on one of the online auctions and acquired a beautiful 2002 Ford E350. It was clean. It runs great. Truly, the best van I’ve ever had.

Gas hog.

It’s a fact. Trucks get better gas mileage than vans. Especially the diesels. So, here we are, thinking of changing vehicles again. Here is the question. Do we sell the Ford van and the International and get a Dodge RAM3500? This is a tough one. Last August it cost us about $440 in just fuel for the International and the Ford F150 truck to go from Colorado to Texas in our bi-annual migration. A distance of barey 1000 miles. I remember when it cost us around $50-60 to make that trip. But the price of fuel is hurting everywhere.

Cons for having only one vehicle:

We will still have to try to fit everything into the trailer and truck. We want to take our small 12 flatbed trailer with us so we can have something to haul the ponies on short trips, and we would pull that with the van while the International pulls the big tailer/i.e. house. Also, we were thinking it would make things easier if we carried all Crystal Mountain business stuff in the Ford, thereby avoiding any potential problems from the DOT if they ever caught us hauling business stuff in the International or the trailer it pulled. THAT immediately makes you commercial.

Pros for selling the van and the International and having just one truck:

One vehicle means repairs on only one vehicle. It also means lower insurance for just one vehicle.

Larry and I and the dog get to ride together every trip. No need to be constantly calling each other on the phone, or talking on the CB, or having to keep up with each other.

A Dodge RAM3500 will pull the big-ass trailer just as easily as the International will (turns out the International only has DT360 instead of the DT466 they told us it had. The International has a Allison automatic, so it only gets about 10mpg anyway, and it would cost money to put in a manual tranny to get better fuel mileage. Our old Dodge 2500 had a manual tranny, but because it didn’t have the dually rear-end it didn’t pull the trailer well enough.)

Pulling the trailer with just a Dodge 3500 will no longer attract attention from the DOT’s. They love to harass truck drivers, and if you aren’t clean it can be a HUGE pain. Larry and I have taken absolutely EVERY precaution about being legal with this International and the Smokey Bears still want to pull Larry over and tell him he isn’t legal.

We can get better fuel mileage with a Dodge 3500 even pulling the trailer. Empty we can probably get 8-20 mpg and loaded probably at least 12-13 mpg. Both the Ford E350 and the International get only about 10-12 mpg empty.

I have heard the dually’s are a stiffer ride, but the two Dodge 2500s we had road like a Cadillac……and Larry might be able to enjoy A/C again.

So, should we sell the Ford and International and buy another Dodge?

You can post your comments at www.facebook.com/crystalmountainoilsandincense

Musings of a micro-business person

Being in business can be pretty scary sometimes. These last few years have been nerve-wracking. It only seems to get worse.

Now, I don’t like being a complainer, and I won’t do it here, but my thoughts have been wandering towards becoming a “real” business. Larry and I have run a Mom/Pop craft business – rather successfully, I might add – for nearly 20 years now. Pretty amazing for two people who have no formal training in business management. When I was in high school, I really had no idea what the CVAE, DECA, KEY or even CAE clubs were all about. I truly had no inspiration as a teenager, no one to tell me how to achieve.

I learned all about achieving from Larry, my second husband. Now, of course, I have ambition out the whazoo, but I still lack a lot of skills on how to make all that happen. What I can see, however, are vague images of things that I know I need to know. I just can’t quite decipher them clearly. I see other rennies doing business, and I watch how they balance and juggle the craft/artist, accountant, marketing, sales, janitor, web mastering, shipping/receiving, research/development matrix. I sometimes wonder if they are just as confused as I am, or did they figure out some secret? Do they actually have any schooling in business? My sister and her husband formed a small business of their own and they seem to be doing very well, thank you. Is it really because they ‘played’ the game and paid all the licenses and permits, filed all the incorporation papers, set up all the payroll, applied for the business line of credit? All I knew how to do is make something, go set it out and hope someone will buy it. And buy it they did! It was the 1990’s and people just bought and bought and bought!

Eventually, it came to a severe adjustment. George Bush was in the White House and the Dot Com market had made it’s crash, balancing out the mad credit lending. While it was enjoyable while it lasted, I think the credit economy is trying to adjust back to pre-1970’s where people with good credit had credit and people with bad credit didn’t have credit and had to live on a cash basis, and not this blue sky concept that everyone is entitled to everything. One must work for what one wants.

Take Crystal Mountain. We have ALWAYS lived on a cash basis. It doesn’t have anything to do with our credit history (well, ok, we’ve incurred some medical debts), I just get scared about the ability to pay on a credit card. Larry and I are always saying that one should take calculated risks, otherwise you won’t ever leave the train station of dreams, but I am wondering if not sticking my neck out to pay debt has hampered Crystal Mountains ability to expand. Now I’m thinking that was a stupid question. Fiscal conservative is suppose to the be the model, right?

So all this rambling – I didn’t score well in my high school English composition classes either – is that I am beginning to see the value of getting educated in business management. True, I’ve learned a LOT in 20 years, but I keep thinking there is more to learn. There are lots of books out there, but even those can skip topics. I’ve learned a lot on how to manage people – still working on that too. I’ve learned about keeping records and filing taxes. What I am starting to learn about now is business plans, executive summaries, and a host of financial, number crunching, type reports that I haven’t got the foggiest idea on where to start. Year-to-Date Profit and Loss, current Balance sheet – I mean, Crystal Mountain is so small! I am at a loss on how to find those numbers. Our inventory isn’t on paper – it’s the “look on the shelf and order” method.

I wonder if it is worth taking out a micro loan just to pay some accountant to get my papers in order so I can apply for a small business loan? A loan for a loan. It sounds silly, some might say it is a plan. Naw, I think I’m conservative enough to just keep on doing business the way we have for 20 years. Anyway, I have a big faire coming up in 4 weeks and I gotta go make pretty, smelly things.

Why I need my Cummins

This is why I need my Cummins.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LPZcScNc9pU/TEujBTyk64I/AAAAAAAAAMo/_39OJS3bes8/s320/why+i+need+my+cummins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497667013023427458" />

My business simply demands a lot of travel. Back in the ‘old day’ it was a lot easier – and a lot cheaper – when fuel was only about a dollar a gallon. It was easier and profitable to travel all over the country to shows, and know that I could still come out with some money in my pocket. Now that fuel is more than three times the cost, it takes about $150 to get from Toon Town to Colorado, instead of the old $40-$50.

Vehicles have changed also. Back when I first started working at Ren Faires, and just before I started traveling full time, the vehicle of choice was the Ford Econoline F150. EVERY rennie had one it seemed. James and I bought one after our first summer on the road, and I think he eventually got around 300k miles on it. Larry and I have been through at least 3 Ford vans over the years. That 351 V8 just seems to have been the best ever engine for hauling your stuff around. And rennies have stuff. Lots of stuff.

I’ve seen people take a 20 foot, 20 year old travel trailer and load every square inch of the floor, bed, tables and privy with their clothes, costumes, books, stock, tents, you name it. And then they wonder why the springs break. And the van that they try to pull it with is just as loaded, although, somewhere, there is a nook they crawl into for sleeping on the road. Good as that Econoline was, it didn’t have enough oomph to pull some of those trailers.

These days the Econoline is a retired icon. Now I see more Dodge Cummins diesel at faires than any other vehicle. Maybe it’s just the newer technology, or who knows, but rennies have discovered the power of diesel. Power strokes follow a close second. Everyone has their favorites, but I am sold on Cummins. Larry is a former truck driver, with more than 2 million logged commercial miles. That takes an average of 20 years to accumulate, and that’s only his logged miles *wink*. Trucks is what Larry knows. He is a Cummins fan. And after we got our first Dodge back in 1998, I’ve been a fan every since. We sold our second Dodge last April so we could buy this...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LPZcScNc9pU/TEujdlr1XRI/AAAAAAAAAMw/VtDc3SdXPWI/s320/new+rig+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497667498863320338" />

We had bought the trailer last August. We sold the Dodge in order to buy the International, needing something that could haul that big ass trailer. And we acquired the Ford 150 above for a runabout. I MISS my Cummins! It was so weird to drive a gas engine again. There is nothing else like driving a Cummins and once you’ve driven one, you’ll never want to drive anything else again. Granted, this little Ford has proven to be a really good workhorse – it has more than 300k miles on it and it’s still going strong. But we simply need more. The picture above the bed is totally loaded, with more stuff in the rear of the cab, so hauling a 4 horse trailer with two ponies in it is stretching the limits.

The good news is that the International that we bought will be fairly inexpensive to switch engines in it. It came with a DT360 in it, which doesn’t have much more power in it than our 5.9 liter Dodge Cummins did. But on big trucks all parts are interchangeable. You can take a Peterbilt or a Kenworth, drop in any tranny you want in either, or a Detroit or Cummins – they all fit. So Larry is going to find an older Cummins with a half a million miles on it and put it in. We’ll never be able to overload now!

More CRF

It is difficult for me to not keep saying "wow" when I'm in Colorado. Just wait a second.....

Colorado is a wonderful place. It can also be a harsh place. Larry and I don't do the extreme sports like a week of wilderness camping in the winter, or rock climbing. In fact, we don't even hike much anymore, but we have done some awesome exploring over the years. But if you spend any time in Colorado at all, you will experience its intenseness.

Opening weekend at Colorado Renaissance Festival was one of those trying weekends. It was SO un-Colorado like for the weater to be has cold, rainy and harsh for so long as it was. It wasn't the best impression Erika had of the state that I've so long praised. But we got through it without incedent and had a couple of good weekends weather-wise and crowd-wise.

This weekend - weekend number four - was typical of Colorado. Warm and dry, actually almost balmy in the mornings. And right on schedule - about 3 o'clock in the afternoon - along came the 20% chance of rain. The rain on this day, as is common, turned into hail. First, the normal pea sized hail. After about 15 minutes it stopped.

But the clouds didn't go away as they usually do. Withing 20 minutes it started again. Marble size hail. The hail abated. Then more. Eventually, after about 60 minutes of on again off again hail, the hail got bigger each time, until it was golf ball size!

With the onslaught of the first hail, people ran for the booths. Especially with some of the other faires, its either a tent or a hotel room. Havin an efficient apartment right behind where I work is the ULTIMATE. My drive from Alabama to Larkspur, Colorado was long but very beautiful! My co-pilot Tasha was enjoying the ride herself. She is such a great travelin companion. Makings of a good rennie dog...lol

Life is definitely interesting on the road. Im used to that everyday hustle of the corporate world. The job that is always in the same place...how boring! My first week in Colorado was one for the books in my travels. Colorado Renaissance started off on a harsh note. It was so cold and wet and instead of bringing a heater on the road I brought a fan instead. Must remember to prepare for anything on the road. Thank god I wasnt in a tent!

Last week, Larry and Kerry took me on a quided tour of absolutely beautiful scenery and a drive up to their property up in Whitehorn. It was a WOW kind of day. With the cold weather we had that weekend, the mountain tops were covered in snow. As soon as I figure out my digital camera I will post some pictures.

Its an absolutely beautiful day here today, so Im taking Kerry's advice and Im taking the day off to go on a walkabout with Tasha. Need to remember to buy batteries for the camera.

Short - REALLY short - updates

I keep telling Erika to enjoy her time in Colorado but yesterday I realized that we are working her a bit too hard. If you have money, you usually don't have time, and if you have time, you usually don't have any money. So with blogging, if I have something to write about, I don't have time to write, and if I have time to write, I don't have anything to blog about.

Our trip up here was fairly uneventful. We had one stop south of Fort Worth to replace some coolant hoses, then on our way. It was hot - for Larry mostly, as me and Shadow had A/C in the Ford. We arrived at the ranch where we are staying about 5 pm. After unloading the ponies and parking the trailer, we drove over to the faire site and unloaded the pickup.

Sunday saw about 2 more 'unloadings'. I think when I die I will have my tombstone read

"Finally Unloaded"

The booth is in amazingly good shape. There is very little to do to get ready except rearrange a few shelves to accomidate a slightly different setup in the back room. The sign out front needs a small touch up.

Everyone is there of course. If they aren't there, they are pulling in everytime I turn around. Irish is already there. Cricket is there. And Zak on the other side. Yes, this is a good booth location.

Erika drove long on Monday. She left Fort Smith Arkansas Monday morning and got into Colorado Springs about 11:15 pm. We met her at a local 7-11 and guided her to the booth. I hop in her car as we follow Larry. Tasha her pomeranian isn't very sharing with the front seat. Erika is packed to the gills and her car smells like ours! Waifs of aromas meander by with every turn!

It's only 8 miles to site. "Here ya go, Erika. See you in the morning". We don't stay long.

The next morning we all slept in. How can you not sleep well up here in the cool, dry mountain air?

Tuesday. Erika has gotten all her stuff unloaded and set up in her bedroom and even showered. She is thrilled! And it IS a very comfy bedroom for a booth. I've been in and stayed in a lot of different renn booths over the past 30 years. There are some nice apartments and then there are some no better than a cardboard box and you have to argue with the rats for sleeping space.

At one point I take Erika on a tour of the site. I just keep trudging away, up hill, down hill. At first Erika stops a few times. I'm trying to tell her that she REALLY will consider quiting smoking after this trip to Colorado. I hope so.

Lots to do. Today I will get Erika's internet connection set up so she can start talking about Tennessee and her thoughts on Colorado. That will be good, because I have a lot of catching up to to on my other blog. But now we are done traveling for a bit, I will have more time on the 'puter, assuming I don't fall asleep early like I did last night.

Rennie road trips

Gotta say, I think rennies must have the best road trip stories. Even if we haven't gotten on the road yet! Larry and I have been working for several weeks without break in mid-ninety-something degree weather and we are about whupped. This vagabond traveling makes for great campfire stories, but sure is tough when it's happening.

Last summer, if you remember, we bought us a big trailer. This spring we bought us a big truck to pull our big trailer. The Tennessee Renaissance Festival was suppose to finance the putting together and fixing up stuff, but because of the massive flooding and the rain in Tennessee, the faire made the budget a bit tighter. But that really isn't the problem. It's time.

Time is what Larry doesn't have. At his age, it is just difficult to be crawling around under a truck fixing things, picking up and pushing things. It takes longer - so it seems - to do things. When you are 30 or 35 years old, hell, even 45 or 50 years old, a person still has a good measure of strength and endurance. Larry celebrated - if you call it that - his 71st birthday a week ago today.

But I think it isn't even that. This truck IS a good truck, but every day it seems Larry finds another thing that needs fixing before we can put it on the road hauling a 42 foot trailer.

First we had to take off all the lettering, which was my job, and clean it and then paint on "Non-Commercial For Recreational Use Only" to help get past the DOT. Both Texas and Colorado DOT told us that is what we need to have in order to not be pulled over. And the truck is a class 4-6 and under the 26,000 lb weight limit for CDL, so I think we will be cool there, but there is always the occasional trooper that has to check things out. I hope there will never be a blog about that.

Then I put in some carpet and carpet padding (not in that order!). All the while Larry is finishing up a few basics in the trailer - mostly the pony stall. Then he has to drill through 3/4" steel and mount the ball for the gooseneck, and put on a sheet of plywood for a makeshift 'bed' behind the cab. Then he had to fix the brake lights on the truck. Before all that he had to put the seats back in the truck and fix the air lines. I had the fun of getting under the truck to put on the washers and nuts. Got to know my drive line real good there.

Somewhere in there I put on some limo tint on the back window of both the big rig and the pickup. Helps keep the heat down in the cabs as we head west. The big truck doesn't have any A/C, so Larry will have to drive with the windows down, but once we get to Amarillo it will be better. Less humidity but the weather is forcasting 100 degree days up in the Texas panhandle for the next couple of days. As we are also hauling some livestock (our two ponys, which you can read about on my other blog Hoofbeats), we are seriously considering doing some driving at night.

At one point Larry fires up the truck to move it, and the brakes are stuck...that took nearly a day to unfreeze. Today he finally hooks the truck to the trailer for the first time and spent nearly an hour fixing the wiring on the pigtail because the turn signal wires were switched. Oh yea, he had already had to correct them when he fixed the brake lights earlier, because he had the wires backwards. When you turned on the left blinker the front left and the right rear would go off and visa versa. Once he got the truck blinkers all in sync, the trailer lights were switched! Larry was smart enough to put in a terminal fuse block on the trailer wires, so it was easier to work with. For anyone who has tried to wire a trailer pigtail and get all the right wires matched up with the correct wires on your truck, you know what a headache THAT can be. In fact, when we picked up the trailer last August in Hobbs, NM, it took Larry and two others all day long to try and get turn signals and brake lights working correctly......and never did.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LPZcScNc9pU/TAb6sZZRHPI/AAAAAAAAAI0/sRj5ftrtVic/s320/rig.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478341637380840690" />

So Larry pulls the trailer out and is going to run it down to Dave's Country Store for a test run, see how it feels. Larry doesn't stop at Dave's because Larry doesn't have brakes. Uh oh......

Another job. It is obvious we aren't leaving in the morning. I am beginning to think I have done something bad to someone and it's my karma to keep staying here on the Texas Gulf Coast in June. Hot. Humid. Sticky. Mosquitos. This is one t-shirt a day weather.

Trip number 582 to the NAPA parts store. More calls to the local International Truck place with questions. It is a air brake canister. Good news, it is on sale this month for only $48. Beats the $87 International wanted.

And all this before we even pull out of the driveway. Larry won't get his CB put in either. One of these days I will find that 5 page story that the late Bear wrote about how it took him 2 weeks to get from the Colorado Renaissance Festival to the Michigan Renaissance Festival. Ever rennie has a road story.

Bi-annual moving

Packing up the shop is always a challenge. After doing this at least twice a year for the past, oh, 18 years, you would think I have a system down. Not so! This is because we don't always have the same truck or trailer to work with. And this spring is challenging because I gave a lot of my tupperwares to Kevin. Larry's oldest son Kevin, came to live with us for a while after Larry had triple by-pass heart surgery on March 17, 2009, and Kevin left back in January. He packed a bunch of stuff and didn't have enough weatherproof tupperwares to put it all in, so I said "Here, use these, I'll get some more later" Did I? What do you think?

This year, as well, we are packing different things. I have decided to persue my childhood dream of drawing horses, so I am trying to pack up an artist studio as well as all the things that go with Crystal Mountain. Crystal Mountain usually just consists of lot of large jugs of oils, a box or two of punks, and 30 shoebox size plastic boxes of made incense, jewelry making stuff (small boxes), and various shipping and packing things.

This year, we have a BIG trailer to put it all in!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LPZcScNc9pU/TABnaLhG3qI/AAAAAAAAAIk/8gfH0rbwtCc/s320/new+trailer+006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476490846348435106" />

We also got ourselves a BIG truck to pull it with!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_LPZcScNc9pU/TABptCllbaI/AAAAAAAAAIs/PkHFgNhKYhY/s320/truck2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476493369392065954" />

These are old pictures. The picture of the trailer was taken somewhere near Carls Corner in New Mexico last July on our way back to Colordo from buying it. It now has a bunch of windows and Larry has stripped out the inside and is rebuilding it. I will probably get pictures of that in the ensuing weeks. The picture of the truck is also right after we bought it, before we had the bent frame fixed. We shortened the frame and we've taken off the lettering. Eventually we will pimp it out! But we love projects. Just wish we had more energy and more hours in a day to work (without the 90+ degress thank you very much).

And that is where Erika comes in. To help with the shows and with Crystal Mountain in general, so Larry can retire and do what he wants to do, and so I can have more time to paint horses. We thought Misty would be the one to step in, but that was not ment to be. Erika has been waiting and working in the wings for 10+ years, and she is ready. But Erika has lost her internet connection this past week or so, so it looks like she will be catching up on her stories on this blog after she gets to Colorado. She is leaving in the morning for the final weekend of Tennessee, with a 40-50% chance of thunderstorms all weekend. If she can make it through this, she can make it through anything.

Best of luck, Erika.

The Mad Rush of Spring

I've been waiting for Erika to post her Tennessee adventures, but she is having problems with her internet access, so I guess it's up to me. Erika has been pretty busy at home during the week, but she says the weekends are her escapes from the responsibilites at home. I understand that. That is why renaissance festivals are so popular, even when times are tough. A chance to escape the everyday, to get away from CNN, or FOX, to forget the partisan name calling, the oil spills.

Erika hasn't had a chance to talk about her first weekend excitement. Of course the show was shut down all weekend, and she had worked her butt off getting ready for.......................................................................................nothing.

She spent the whole weekend in her motel room. Saturday evening she went to the closest Walmart for some mud boots, not knowing that the show wasn't even going to open the next day, got stuck dead in the traffic on I-24 for a while watching the water rise ever more. Sunday she said she was fine, she had her bottle of vodka and the tv and she was sittin' pretty!

She will get back online soon, and once in Colorado she will have plenty of time to talk about Tennessee as well as Colorado. Erika has never been to Colorado so Larry and I are looking forward to showing her all the high points (no pun intended). She is calling herself 'Gypsy-in-training'!

Meanwhile I have been busy trying to get everything ready to go. I've bbeen cleaning a extra set of display bottles so Larry and I can bring Crystal Mountain back to some of the little mountain shows we were attending before we got into the Colorado Renaissance Festival. But I've gone through an entire case of incense punks (10,000) in just 3 weeks - that's a lot of incense orders! And a lot of other errands, chores, distractions - you name it. So what am I doing sitting here typing a blog? So much to do, so little time....

We are looking to leave for Colorado next Tuesday, we won't know if we will be ready or not, but I guess we will load up and go in some stage of preparedness or not. Seems like ages ago since we've been there and I am SO looking forward to it! Not sure if I'll get another blog in before then, but I will get one in before the show starts.

Geez, I hope I don't forget anything.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival

The Tennessee Renaissance Festival started on May 1, 2010. Unfortuately mother nature was hitting us with a massive flood that Tennessee hasnt seen in over 100 years. The faire opened for 2 hours on Saturday, May 1 but the rains keep coming but not the customers, so the faire closed down and never reopened the first weekend. I was fortuate to have a hotel room where i spent the whole weekend high and dry til the roads opened up. After billions of dollars of damage the previous weekend, we had great weather for the second weekend a huge happy crowd gathered and there seem to be no signs that there was a massive flood the weekend before.
My first year on the road for Crystal Mountain started with alot of excitement and Im so looking forward to more adventures on the road.

A Year In A Day

May 9, 2009. 363 days ago. It has been a long and busy year. I know you guys aren't out there reading this, but I'm writing anyway. A lot of goals have been achieved in various forms. Crystal Mountain is doing well at the shows and while I know the fans are out there, we only just signed up for Facebook yesterday and the fans that are 'friending' have just amazed us. 87 in 36 hours! So that is what prompted me to write an entry.Erika, brave Erika, is heading back to Tennessee this weekend. She will tell us all about it after she gets back. Officially the show started last weekend, but we won't count that, with all the flooding and all. The show was open for a whole 2 hours of what was suppose to be a 3 day weekend. Well THAT was a bummer! And with no disrepect for those whose have lost so much in the flooding, because to put it mildly, they had a bummer weekend too.Melissa is learning to turn our wooden aromanecklaces and she is really getting into the lathe work. Her creations will be presented at the Colorado Renaissance Festival this summer.Misty has moved on. She is engaged to Charlie and her heart really lies in tattoo art, which she is persueing. Erika is making more smoking bottles and leatherwraps, Debbie is cranking out the wirewraps and stonewraps, and Larry is still building big things. Me, I'm just working on keeping it all centered and going forward. Can't wait to hear about Erika's weekend.

Spring....uh, summer actually

Winter has been good this year. Larry is coming along great and is back to work with a few limitations still in effect. Spring lasted the traditional 3 days here, and now it is summer. Normann was great again! Thanks everyone! Spring Pecan Street was a normal ok. Looking forward to doing Tennessee next year. Anxious to get started on Colorado and our new booth.

We bought Michael DeVeny's booth "Alchemaille". It isn't a big booth but we don't need a lot of space. or those of you who go to Colorado it is on the left as you come in the front gate just past Lloyd Studios the awesome bone carver.

Been busy working with the shows and the usual mail order and such. It was a bit busy while Larry was recuperating, but that's over with. A lot of my time has been taken up with a new business that I'm trying to get off of the ground. www.nickersandsnorts.com. I've always wanted to do horse art so I'm giving it a go. Over the next 2 years you will see more and more of Erika at Crystal Mountain.

I hate to post and run, but there isn't a lot of news. Once we get to Colorado I'll post some pictures and introduce you to our Christmas present.....

This winter has kept us busy and then this.....

One should always be prepared to go with the flow of life. Sometimes it isn't what we want, but the ability to accept what is happening and face it head on allows us to take control of it and make more choices in the results. My cancer episode. Now Larry.

Back in January Larry THOUGHT he had a hernia. For several days he tried to ignore it. It had sorta bothered him for several months but finally he went to a doctor to see if something could be done. It wasn't acting like a regular hernia so we weren't sure, but it sure hurt. While there the doctor of course wanted to run some bloodwork and Larry was cool with that because he has been wanting to know what his cholesterol was. The results weren't nice. His cholesterol was 279 and his tryglycerides were 500+. Doc says go see a cardiologist.

Cardiologist does a echocardiogram. Nothing found there. Then has Larry run a stress test. Larry does so-so on that. So Doc says he thinks larry has some blockages and sends Larry off to do a CT scan. CT scan shows what was suspected and unwelcome. Blockages. Two about 70-80%. Doc says it's Larry call to put in some stents. We think about it for a week. Larry had a heart attack in 1989 due to too much fun (cocaine induced) and had a angyoplasty done then on one artery. So he is taking this seriously. We decide to do the stents. After all, the procedure is a day surgery and only mildly invasive. We feel like we are in control and taking care of things. Kinda like keeping your oil changed regularly.

So Larry goes in for the day procedure and while in surgery the doc discovers from the cathe lab imaging that is done prior to inserting the stents that Larry was worse that they thought. Three blockages - 75%, 95% and 100%!

So the Doctor won't do stents with blockages like that and says bypass is the only thing. That was a blow. It took us a week to research that and think, but Larry decided to 'getter dun'. Better fix that now than risk a heart attack later.

So that's the story. Yep, it was like having a freight train run over you. After all, surgery on your heart is about the most invasive thing you can do. Of all the risk factors from this type of surgery the doctors said Larry had none of them. Larry is healing fast and will soon be back to normal. Already he is noticing some differences that he didn't even realize. The effects of circulation can be very subtle and you don't even notice it.

So (you've heard this before!) eat right and exercise. It is all about quality of life not quantity. And appreciate life.

Election time

It's a cinch to see I'll never make a living writing daily editorials. When I was a kid, writing was never my cup of tea. Drawing was. I was also the one getting into trouble for drawing horses on the side of my math test. Funny tho, I don't draw these days any more than I write. Too busy making the aromajewelry it seems, or just doing business paper work.

TRF opened with a bang. The weather was great all weekend and Saturday the crowds were excellent! 26+ I heard. It was the best opening weekend we've had since Hurricane Rita came through in '05. And, since we have more perfect weather forcast for this second weekend, it looks like we are in for a very enjoyable TRF 2008.

For all of us who make a living doing renaissance festivals and art shows, the ecomomy is the most important item on our list this election year (health care being second). Obviously, the more expendable income the masses have, the more likely we are to also make a good living despite the ever increasing cost of basics like fuel, good and utilites. Larry and I are fairly devoted political junkies. Yep, we've watched all 4 presidential and vice presidential debates this year. We are excited. This has been a great campaign this time around. Politics by nature are mud slinging, platform-ranting episodes. But some are way worse than others. Take the Jefferson-Hamilton-Van Buren wars of the election of 1800 (yea, I know, some of you are old enough to rememeber them....). I think that both Obama and McCain have conducted themselves impressivly this year in staying above the mud slinging and sticking to the issues. None of that Swiftvote lies and deliberate misleading that so dominated the 2000 & 2004 elections. So, our hates are off to you, Barak and John, for showing this country that if we really put our minds to it, we really can get back to what we all SAY we want. The American dream of hard work and success, honor and fairness. Some say America is past it's prime and on the downslide. But just like this extra 15 pounds I've put on in the past few years, I don't have to just sit back and accept it. I can certianly keep working on loosing it. Only time will tell if we've worked hard enough and correctly to achive what we want.

It really IS important to vote this year. That's hard to believe. Surely the biggest reason Larry and I do what we do is so we can live where we want to live, and that is in the mountains at Whitehorn. I've noticed a lot of rennies and artists we know on the circiut live in Colorado. But driving back and forth to CRF every weekend it seems like we aren't at Whitehorn as much as we would like to be. We noticed that last year when we stayed on site all during the fair. At least this summer we are getting in about 3 days a week at Whitehorn. We do get some work done - weather permitting. Life is simple even here. The internet is my only distraction, and living off a generator I don't get enough time online here as I do in the winter in Toon Town.

And the faire is half over as well. It has been a great faire and I feel totally at home here, even tho it is only my second year at CRF. Although Larry and I aren't totally involved with the rennie community, I have come to realize that it is my family. Living in Toon Town and on site make me realize how wonderful it really is to have such an oppurtunity. I'm sure there are lots of other close communities around the world such as the rennie life. But somehow I just fell into this life and I realize that, strangley, I have achived much of my childhood dreams. I get to make my living off of my art, I get to travel and meet all sorts of people, and I get to live in the mountains. The only part I haven't accomplished yet is how in the world am I going to manage to get those horses I always dreamed of having.........

Thoughts at Waffle House

It's Monday morning and Larry, Misty and I are sitting in Waffle House waiting on breakfast. I love Waffle House, maybe because I love eggs. We had a really killer opening weekend at the Colorado Renaissance Festival and Waffle House is a common treat after a good weekend. Certianly I don't want to cook and clean up on Monday mornings. Actually, I'd rather sleep all day but the nature of our business dictates that I get up and get orders made, deposits deposited and plans for the week sorted out so that the next weekend runs smoothly. WEDNESDAYS are for sleeping in.

While we are waiting on our food a young man walks by going to the restroom. He is dressed in a t-shirts and nice shorts. But he has tattoos and is wearing a funky bone necklace. Looks like one of todays youth to me. Then I thought about the previous Friday. The faire site was busy busy busy with everyone getting all the last minute setups done. Right in front of us this year is the Mongolian Embassy. Royce and his crew are typical Rennies I guess. Long hair and beards. Funky jewelry. Tattoos. Often funky clothes. So many rennies wear skirts and pants that obviously didn't come from Walmart. Rennies make a striking image when we are in the local King Sooper shopping for food. Yet as Royce finished his work and was starting his truck to leave, it occured to me (not for the first time) that while we don't look like your standard 9-5 office workers, rennies are amazing business people and extremely hard workers. We work as hard at our jobs and buisnesses as any plumbing contractor or insurance agent.

My eggs have arrived. Time to eat.

carbon footprints

As I watch CNN in the evenings it seems that the only topic they talk about, besides the campaign, it the cost of everything. Even if W is your boy, it seems that just about everyone I talk to is not happy with the direction things are going. Price of fuel fuels the price of every thing else. The 3" x 12" ziplock bags that we use for incense has tripled in the past 5-6 years. Why? Plastic is petroleum related. And everywhere there is advice on how to ease the crunch, or how to help soften the global warming threat. As I sit here on the Texas gulf coast today it would be awfully hard to convince me that the world isn't warming up. It sure-dang-nab-it is hot here!

So it got me to thinking. The price of everything is hitting most of us. Even if you have more expendable income than I do, you're still paying the same price for gas and groceries as I am. For the past 20 years I have lived amongst a sub-culture we call 'rennies'. We are artists and performers who travel from show to show to provide you - those we call the masses, aka "patrons" - whom work 9-5 jobs and careers - with a place to escape your world and enjoy yourselves. A place to forget that you have car payments, mortgages and electric bills to pay. We live on the road most of the year. Some of us live in nice 5th-wheel trailers pulled by Dodge cummins diesels (some drive Fords), or we travel in a Ford Econoline and pull a box trailer of our stuff. We set up incredibly creative camp sites (including Dave Love and his famous yurt - I'll have to do a chapter on him some day). We use propane for cooking and heating, plug in when we can for lights and water, use the local shower house for showers and dishes. Tons of us are online with wireless laptops. So I wonder what our carbon footprint is? We don't pay as much for electric and water as most brick home owners do. We pay a lot more for fuel to do our traveling than most office bound workers do. But here is where I think we do good. We travel with the seasons, like the native americans did. When it's cold in Minnesota, we aren't there. We're in Florida or Arizona. In the summer, we aren't in Texas.....we're in Michigan, New York or Minnesota. While we may drive a 1000+ miles to get to work once every 8-10 weeks, we like summer where it's cool and winters where its warm. Larry and I are packing up this week to head to the Colorado Rockies for the summer. It's humid and 90something here in Texas from now until fall, and this time next week we will be whiffing our first breaths of that mountain air where it will be 70something during the days and 30something at nights until Labor Day. Then it will get cold and like last year we will wake up some September morning and find our water frozen again and look at each other and say "yep, it's time to head back south".

And as for carbon footprints, during the summer since we live in the mountains, we don't use AC. We use some propane for heat, we haul our water from town once a week and run on generators for our computer and TV. Which means we don't run the generator 24/7. So we are doing what we can to keep it simple. It's it strange that simple really is the solution to all this global warming yet I can't imagine life without the internet (and I'm old enough to have grown up before the internet - I graduated in '78 and Larry in...well....longer ago). To really live simply, take an example from the Afghanistan tribes. We say 'primitive' but they live simply. And India and China - we use to revere their simple philosophy but kept edging them on to not be so "backward" and "primitive". And this is what we get. They DO want to be like us, and now we are all paying the price for global US-like consumption.

But with all this, take heart to what Carlos Mencia said "Don't worry about it until the mexicans DON'T want to come here"

*"Fear is temporary, regret is permanent"*

Norman again.....and Misty

I hope I hope I hope.....We could never have hoped this hard. If we were to pick a goal to aim for this spring at Norman we would have fallen sadly short. It was crowded, it was sunny and beautiful, it was fun, and did I say crowded? Larry says it was "Mardi Gras" crowded. Everyone had fun, we sold TONS of aromanecklaces (so all ya'll can smell good). Thank you Linda Linn for producing yet another perfect example of a festival.

Did any of you meet Misty? Without her help, Larry and I would have been very tired puppies. Come to think of it, we were ALL tired puppies anyway! This years' Norman was a 3 person weekend - it took all three of us to run the booth. Misty is the new face of Crystal Mountain. Over the years you will see her everywhere, and eventually she will BE Crystal Mountain. Larry and I love doing the oils and incense but it is hard work (did any of you realize that Larry is going to be 70 next year?). Larry is discovering woodturning, and he wants to have more time to persue that. We won't be totally out of the picture for a long time, but you will see Misty more and more.

Misty is Larry's oldest granddaughter. She is 22, a gemini. We first introduced her to our oils etc when she was 10 and she loved them even then. She created the blend 'Sunberry' way back then, which has been popular ever since. It has taken her a long journey since then to join us, but like the old chinese proverb "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear". It was the right time for her to join us. She came to live with us last October to help with TRF since I was just starting my chemo treatments then and we didn't know how I would handle it all. As it went, she has stayed with us all winter in what she calls "grandpa's boot camp" learning all sorts of things from actually making stock to filling mail orders to what it takes to be an exceptional person. Now it's off to do her first show by herself and I think she will rock.

You like our new vardo? The first one is at Tennessee and it will stay there. This new one has been traveling with us but it might stay in Colorado. Then we might just build a third one, but we like this design best.

Like most blogs....I have other things I need to get done so I'll run for now. It's all about getting everything done in time and not working til 3 am the night before we leave. Certainly we've done that before, but the older we get the less fun it is. Misty - I mentioned her in the last posting - is 22 and she so reminds me of how much I would stay up all night at that age. While it seems I work harder and get more done during the day than she does, I'm out like a light come 10 pm. Is this what age is all about? That's hard to believe. And you would think after doing shows for so long I would have it all done and organized. Well, we are much better than we use to be. And this is the type of mental information we are trying to pass on Misty....gee, were my parents really so right about young people? How unaware was I back then?

I know everything will go well. Most everything is finally done. All that is left is our new wood aromanecklaces that will make thier introduction at Norman. Also, Norman is predicting some most awesomely beautiful weather for next weekend. I hope everyone comes out and has a good time, and I hope they don't have to spend all thier money on gas to get there! And, for the 17th time, I'm looking forward to the Norman Medieval Faire once again! See you there!

*sheepish grin*....try again?

As I stated in my very first posting.....I'm not in the habit of typing my thoughts on the computer. Ah Contraire! I LIVE on my computer (as much as I can) but usually I'm checking emails, answering customer questions or orders, playing with Dreamweaver or Photoshop etc etc etc. It has been a year now and all I got posted was 3 little posts last spring. SO LET ME TRY THIS AGAIN! It is the same time as before - we will be leaving for Norman next week. A lot has happened since then and I'll be talking about a lot of it as time goes by. Misty the granddaughter is living with us and she is working with taking over Crystal Mountain as time goes on. Perhaps, just perhaps, I'll actually find it easier to do this ....blog stuff. More on her later. Also, this past winter my life has been distracted by me having been diagnosed with breast cancer and going through chemo. That is behind me now. I might do some postings on that subject but probably not a lot, since that is not what this blog is all about. Larry has discoverd wood turning, I'll talk about that since he is making some really cool stuff. Let me get this up and posted and I'm going over to www.groups.google.com/groups/scentual and get a new posting up there real quick so I can breath life into all this again. My many thanks to ~*Skye*~ for creating and managing our www.MySpace.com/scentual and for the many many friends that have logged on there. I get to sit down and write some. Norman Medieval Faire was just awesome and everyone there was great. We've got another show under out belt that we can tell stories about, so here goes.

All that work leading up to Norman went well. We were packed and loaded about 1 pm on Thursday afternoon. Since our set up is easy, we figured we could get in anytime and be ready for opeing on Friday morning. But, as per the ol' "April showers bring May flowers" saying goes, Texas on that day had a terrific line of thunderstorms that were just stewing along I-35 from Oklahoma City to Waco. We sat and watched the Weather channel for several hours. We figured as the storms moved eastward, we could leave here and slip up along the back side of the system. Larry choose wrong this time. It seems the storms just stalled right on I-35 and kept moving northward without moving east. Finally, about 4:30 pm we decided it wasn't getting any better so we headed out. Things looked ok and just cloudy until we hit Waco. Suddenly there was this BIG BLACK wall of clouds and the rain started. Well, at least it started on us. Seems it had been pouring rain on Waco all day - we'd just got there. We headed north on I-35 in one of those god-awful walls of water where you could barely see the hood of the truck. Just about mile marker 359 it all came to a halt. Lo and behold we were in the first 50 or so cars that the Texas DOT stopped. They shut down the interstate due to 4 feet of water across the northbound side. This happened a little after 6 pm. So we sat. We listened to the CB and all the crap the truckers talked about. And we sat some more. Fortunately we had some food in the cooler in the back and our truck cab opens into the camper, so we could get comfortable. Finally, even the truckers had listened to enough of thier BS and they started shutting down the trucks and climbing into thier sleepers. It was 10:30 before the flood waters receded and they let us continue.

And that was a good start to the weekend.

We got there about 3 am and crawled into our sleeper/camper until 7 am. Storms were forcasted for the day and it didn't look good, but during the morning it was grey and cloudy, but no rain. Everyone set up and the show began. Fridays at Norman usually aren't very big. The kids came out and as most years - with or without storms - they were pretty much all gone by 2 pm. Then, about 2:30 pm they went around and anounced the fair was closing until the next day, everyone go home and get dry. Poor Larry was crashed out in the truck because he'd been up all night driving. I closed up the booth just as the rain started and got a bit wet. Me and the dog ran to the truck and jumped in. Spent the rest of the evening relaxing at the motel and watchng tornado's form and dissapate over us.

Not very encouraging.

Saturday moring dawn with the most perfect weather anyone could have asked for anywhere! The rest of the weekend just rocked, everyone came out to the fair and had a wonderful time and bought LOTS AND LOTS of stuff from everyone. we were so very busy Saturday, but I did get out and get some pictures.

Here we are....cute little vardo.

And our neighbors for many, many years, Glenda and Connie. But here in Texas the trees are leafed out and the days are more than warm. The wisteria is in full bloom, along with the dogwoods and redbuds. And of course the pine pollen is making EVERYTHING yellow. But I never cease the wonder of each passing season. It seems the gods have it all figured out and no man will ever, ever improve upon it.
And the shows are about to start. We are going to Norman, Oklahoma next weekend. Funny how far the season has progressed here in south east Texas and yet when we drive up to Norman next weekend it will be like driving backwards in the season. Slowly, as we get closer to Fort Worth, then past Denton, the trees start to loose thier green look. The grass will still be brown up there. Some tree buds will just barely be peaking out, hoping that this day will be sunny and warm so it can continue it's yearly journey through the seasons.

Waxing too poetic for you? We love going to Norman OK. There are some years we get up there and the trees are in full bloom and the colors are awesome. And we've been up there in years it was 26 friggin' degrees in the morning. Makes it pretty difficult to set up our booth to sell incense and oils. But over all Norman has been good to us. The people come out in the thousands - litterely. Actually about 200,000 in 3 days. Wonderful crowd. Great people, everyone has a terricfic weekend. We go back to our motel smelling like a French Whorehouse from pouring oils all day. It's wonderful.

I've been sitting at my shop counter the last several days trying to get the last of my aromanecklaces done. Things have gone well this year. I've managed to put together a really nice display without waiting until the 11th hour. Larry is finishing up the wheels for the vardo. They are new this year and I hope things go without mishap, being so close to the weekend. We have to be packed and ready to leave about midday Thursday. It's a 7 hour drive up there. Funny, we've been doing it ever year for 15 years now. Look forward to it every year.

Once we get up there, it's gonna be a busy spring. I hope I sell tons of necklaces and oils and incense and smoking bottles. Once we get back I have to make double stock to get ready for Tennessee and Austin both. I'll let you know how THAT goes! And now I have to go back to my shop counter.....

"Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement."

Welcome to It's A Scentual World....

We don't spend all our waking and non waking hours on blogs, forums or chat rooms. But we have finally reached a point where we would like to engage in a online community talking about what we love to do - Essential and fragrance oils & incense! My name is Kerry and my partner is Larry and we are Crystal Mountain Oils & Incense (found at www.crystalmounta-aromatics.com). Since this is my first post I know no one is out there listening right now, but the more we talk, the more you'll want to put your 2 cents in. So this blog is our thoughts and experiences about the past 15 years as we have made and sold incense, essential and fragrance oils. We'll post comments about technical stuff and links to interesting articles on the web. We'll talk about the magical, "un-scientific" side of oils (and the herbs they come from), mythology and lore about oils. I'll start by posting twice a week. You can check out our website and contact us directly, or you can also visit our Google Group at http://groups.google.com/group/scentual.

Let me go install my printer and get that up and running (my new HP didn't have the right software for the new Vista OS....gherrrrr!). I'll be back shortly to post the first bit of fascinating info for ya.....
